Category 6 cable commonly referred to as Cat6, is a cable standard for Gigabit Ethernet that are backward compatible with the Category 5, 5e Category 3 cable standards.
Category 6 cable contains four twisted wire pairs. Cat6 patch cables provides higher performance than Cat5e and features more stringent specifications for crosstalk and system noise. Cat6 cables and components are backward compatible with Cat5 and Cat5e.Cat6 cables will deliver stable performance to 550 Mhz. Each Cat6 cable comes UL verified, and meets EIA/TIA Cat6 TIA/EIA 568-B-2.1, draft 9 standards. Cat6 patch cables will handle Bandwidth intensive applications up to 250 Mhz and beyond and reduce both impedance and structural return loss as compared to standard 100 Mhz cable! Cat-6 patch cables are normally terminated in 8P8C (RJ45) modular connectors, if Cat6 rated cable are not used with Cat6 Connectors, overall performance is degraded to the connector. The maximum allowed length of a Cat-6 cable is 100 meters (330 ft) when used for 10/100/1000baseT.
